Food fraud threatens every aspect of the Australian food industry
Australia’s food system has grown and evolved over hundreds of years. It is a system that’s served Australians well and underpinned much of our economic prosperity.
But it’s a system at risk. And nowhere is the threat larger or more real than in the domain of food fraud. Unfortunately, for many, it seems to be a lower-order issue.
Compare our attitude to currency fraud. We spend considerable time and effort in combating it — our world-leading, high-tech, anti-counterfeit polymer banknotes prove how seriously we take this issue. Yet no one ever died from eating a counterfeit $5 note, so it’s puzzling that as a country we don’t give similar weight to the issue of counterfeit food.
